Guam residents say rising gas prices are spilling into a cost of living crisis now six weeks into the Iran conflict, and they’re calling on elected leaders to take action.

“I really think we should be prepared for the worst,” said Phayvian Pangelinan, a resident from Yigo.

KUAM spoke with drivers fueling up Monday after Governor Lou Leon Guerrero rejected calls for an emergency declaration.

“We elect leaders to solve problems, but no executive order gives governors superpowers and no emergency declaration from Guam can reopen the Strait of Hormuz,” said Leon Guerrero.

As reported on Friday, Senators Jesse Lujan, Tony Ada, and Chris Duenas urged the Governor to declare a state of emergency, saying families are facing an escalating energy and economic crisis.

In a letter sent to the Governor, Sen. Lujan says the Guam Power Authority’s next fuel shipment this month could cost some $60 million, more than double the usual $25 million.

This as drivers are already paying $6 per gallon for gas and more than $9 per gallon for diesel.

And the impact could soon be felt across the board on all imported goods, Lujan warns, with fuel-related shipping surcharges expected to jump up to 29% mid-April.

“Man, it’s hurting. I own my own business and everything. It’s jacking everything up,” said one resident.

“We feel the difference from what it’s like from a month ago or two. There’s a big difference in the gas pricing,” said Phayvian Pangelinan.

Residents are also sounded off on KUAM’s social platforms.

Elsa Reyes says, “Well better start looking into solar farms, energy storage, fuel reserves, grid modernization and emergency planning.”

Edsel Bondoc says, “Just give the help straight to the people. It's been how many weeks the war has been going on but the government action, it’s been slow.”

Jennifer Chang says, “Get fuel from (the) U.S.! Why (do) we only rely on other countries.”

The governor directly addressed the community, explaining why an emergency declaration is not warranted at this time.

“I have been in direct personal contact with our private fuel suppliers, with the Guam Power Authority and with our military partners. Everyone is telling me the same thing: fuel supply remains stable. Fuel is here and our supply lines are intact. We are in active communication should things change,” said Leon Guerrero.

Meantime, residents we spoke with sent their own message.

“I think she should, as a prevention only, but that’s only my opinion. They’re doing a good job. I can see all angles of it,” added Arnell Francisco from Barrigada.
