Onstott seeks county commissioner seat
POTTER – Mark Onstott has announced he is seeking the District 3 Cheyenne County Commissioner seat.
In a written statement, Onstott said he believes leadership should be built on experience, service and accountability. He added being a county commissioner is another way to serve the county.
“I’ve been blessed and privileged to serve as the fire chief, and protecting the community of Potter and our fire district with a bunch of great individuals. And with that being said, this is another opportunity to serve,” Onstott said.
One point of focus is community growth. The second is county roads, equipment and weeds.
“How do we continue to maintain our county roads. We have over 1,200 miles of county roads within Cheyenne County. How do we continue to maintain those and keep those roads safe as possible for the people out traveling them. And, how do we maintain the equipment to do so. And then, noxious weeds. How do we attack noxious weeds, especially for our agriculture community, and also for private property owners,” he said.
He said noxious weeds can be very tough and expensive to manage. Onstott added the County needs to build upon programs that are working.
His third point is the County needs to be fiscally responsible.
“They’ve done a great job in managing the tax levy and getting it down. I went to almost a year’s worth of county commissioner meetings trying to educate myself, set through their budget meetings so that I’m familiar with how the budget is run, what dollars are going to what, and ensure that all of those things are capsulated into my thought process as I run for this position,” he said.
He said he also wants continue helping constituents within Cheyenne County.
He also supports backing first responders, making sure departments have the training and resources needed.
A town hall meeting is planned for 7 to 8:30 p.m. April 13 at the Potter Youth Center, 524 Olive St., Potter.
