A dangerous chemical hazard shut down part of Highway 24 near Norfolk Wednesday night.
HADAR, Neb.-- A dangerous chemical hazard shut down part of Highway 24 near Norfolk Wednesday night.
At around 7 p.m., a resident near Highway 24 and Crown Road reported a strong smell believed to be anhydrous, a chemical that can be lethal if inhaled.
Deputies with the Stanton County Sheriff’s Office responded and say a tractor was found with a leaking chemical tank at a home in the area.
Officials say Norfolk Fire and Rescue’s hazmat team responded and located the farmer inside the home. Crews then secured the tank and stopped the leak.
Highway 24 was closed for about an hour while the chemical dissipated, and nearby residents were told to stay inside.
