Keeping talent local: how a Wayne State program is filling the Nebraska workforce
Summer is just around the corner, and while some students are planning vacations, 15 others at Wayne State College are focused on where they’ll be working.
NORFOLK, Neb. -- Summer is just around the corner, and while some students are planning vacations, 15 others at Wayne State College are focused on where they’ll be working.
Students in the college’s Growing Together program recently met with employers from across Northeast Nebraska for a casual, "come-and-go" networking event.
For drafting and design major Tanner Bloom, the program is the perfect way to get a foot in the door.
“There are a lot of great companies here in Norfolk that have a lot of great opportunities. To be able to work with the college and have them help support you to get these internships is huge, especially in a competitive job market like there is now,” said Bloom.
For six years, the Growing Together program has helped more than 90% of its students find jobs in Nebraska, with 55% of those staying right here in the northeast.
Wayne State professor Dr. Katie Machovsky says there is no better feeling than helping students launch their careers close to home.
“It’s a great feeling to add to the community with students who are successful. They are bright, hardworking individuals, and it’s very fulfilling to work with them and watch their dreams come true.”
The Growing Together program continues to ensure that Nebraska’s students don’t just graduate here, but build their careers in the state.
