PLATTSMOUTH – The Omaha Public Power District is meeting with local officials to launch the planning phase of a new, 40-mile electrical transmission line that would connect the Cass County station with a substation near Nebraska City.

The utility describes the 345 kilovolt, extra-high voltage line as the largest it has built since 2016.

A press release says the line will improve the north and south flow of electricity and will meet a need identified by the Southwest Power Pool to support reliability and growth.

OPPD says the line will also help the utility take full advantage of the power it generates at Cass County and Nebraska City stations.

OPPD is planning to host public events and online presentations. An online presentation is scheduled at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 2.

A Cassgram report says Dustin Marvel of OPPD told Cass County commissioners that a broad project area will be narrowed through technical analysis and public input.

Segments of double and single circuits are possible depending on the exact route.
