Invest 95W Upgraded to Tropical Depression Nuri
The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office continues to monitor what is now Tropical Depression Nuri, formerly Invest 95W. As of 1 p.m., Nuri was located 10.4N, 136.9E, 100 miles northwest of Yap, about 575 miles west-southwest of Guam. It was moving southwest, with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. It is expected to intensify through tonight, possibly becoming a tropical storm overnight, before gradually weaking beginning Friday.
Nuri is expected to turn toward the northeast, bringing it toward the Marianas, with a passage near or north of Anatahan. Although tropical storm force winds of 39 mph or more are not expected for the Marianas at this time, any shift southward of the system could bring those stronger winds to Guam.
What to Expect for Guam
· Heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms are possible through the next 48 to 60 hours. Heavy showers and thunderstorms may bring wind gusts up to 35 mph.
· Rainfall of 2 to 4 inches, with locally higher amounts are possible Thursday through Friday night, with sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph.
Prepare Now
· Those living in flood-prone areas should take action now; clear drainage areas and unblock storm drains to minimize flooding;
· Stay up to date with the latest information;
· Clear loose debris around your yard and secure any items, such as tents and canopies, that may become airborne with heavy winds, before inclement weather arrives;
· If driving in heavy rain, be alert for low visibilities and slippery roads;
· Slow down where water is ponding on the road;
· Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down, and 2 feet of water can sweep your vehicle away;
· Do not camp, park, or hike along streams and rivers. These areas can flood quickly and with little warning.
· When thunder roars, get indoors. Tents, canopies and tarps are not safe shelter during thunderstorms.
