NORFOLK, Neb.— Norfolk first responders are battling each other to save lives while also having some friendly competition.

Together with the Red Cross, the Fire and Police Departments hosted their battle of the badges blood drive Thursday that they have been having for over 20 years.

“We've always wanted to support the cause. We know how it affects people that we treat and care, our own families and friends,” Fire Chief Tim Wragge said. “So we've always supported that over the years, and it seems like more and more they're dealing with crisis as far as getting donations. So basically just trying to do our part.”

The blood drive this year comes as the American Red Cross is currently suffering a blood shortage so the need is higher.

Though this blood drive has an added twist, the two departments are competing to see who gives more blood. When people come in to donate, they are able to sign their name to support the fire or police. The winner? They get a trophy to keep until the next year.

“It's nice to have some bragging rights, but ultimately, it's just it’s fun to see such a good turnout at these drives, and typically, they've been, by Red Cross's description, pretty good drives for them,” Wragge said.

The fire department won in 2025 and Police Chief Bryan Tighe says they would love to have it back in their hands.”

“It's always nice to beat the fire department, but you know what? The whole community's a winner with the donations and what it's used for,” Tighe said

Both departments know how good it feels to give back to the community they already give so much too.
